By surface analysis, Homla + vik, where Homla (Old Norse *Ímla) is name of the river, upon which the town is located, from the root *Ímull of unknown origin and meaning. The modern name may be understood as derived from hommel + vik (Hop Bay or Bumblebee Bay), where hommel is a variant of humle (“hop, bumblebee”) in Trøndelag dialect, but this etymology is historically incorrect.",
